| Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) for English Learners Classroom Coaching |
| |
A DataWORKS researcher goes to the school to provide feedback on how well teachers are
designing lessons that include researched components that help students learn more and learn faster.
Instructional leaders must attend to learn how to give Lesson Feedback to
teachers to support effective and ongoing implementation.
Why is Explicit Direct Instruction for English Learners
Classroom Coaching
valuable?
| |
The most important factor in student learning is the teacher
in front of the classroom. Research has shown that no matter
how well intentioned, effective staff development requires extensive
monitoring, feedback, and coaching to facilitate effective
implementation amongst all teachers.
Students receive no benefit from staff development that is not implemented.

What is Explicit Direct Instruction for English Learners
Classroom Coaching
and what does the school need to do?
| |
A DataWORKS researcher goes into the classroom to observe and provide
coaching on lessons that include English Learner strategies.
The principal schedules teachers for observations and provides this schedule
in advance to DataWORKS. The teachers should be teaching the EDI lessons
already reviewed during the English Learner Lesson Plan Feedback day.
The principal (and other administrators) must accompany and be trained to make
observations and then continue to observe over additional days until all
teachers are observed and provided coaching.
This process should be repeated until all teachers are effectively
incorporating English Learner Strategies (that accelerate learning for second
language learners) into their classroom lessons.
