| Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) Content Area Literacy Classroom Coaching |
| |
A DataWORKS researcher goes into the classroom to observe and provide coaching on
lessons that include Content Area Literacy strategies that help students access
information through reading. Instructional leaders must attend to learn how to do
Classroom Coaching to provide support for effective and ongoing implementation.
Why is Content Area Literacy
Classroom Coaching
valuable?
| |
The most important factor in student learning is the teacher in front of the classroom.
Research has shown that no matter how well intentioned, effective staff
development requires extensive monitoring, feedback, and coaching to
facilitate effective implementation amongst all teachers. Students don’t
benefit from staff development that is not implemented.
Content Area Literacy Classroom Coaching provides this valuable support and increases
successful implementation.
| How does it work? |
| |
The principal schedules teachers for observations and provides this schedule
in advance to DataWORKS. The teachers should be teaching the EDISM lessons already
reviewed during the Content Area Lesson Plan Feedback day.
The principal (and other administrators) must accompany and be trained to make
observations and then continue to observe over additional days until
all teachers are observed and provided coaching.
This process should be repeated until all teachers are effectively incorporating
Content Area Literacy strategies into their daily classroom lessons to help
students access information through reading.
