Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) Cognitive Strategies Lesson Plan Feedback

A DataWORKS researcher goes to the school to provide feedback on how well teachers are incorporating cognitive strategies (that help student learn and remember) into their written lessons. Instructional leaders must attend to learn how to give Lesson Feedback to teachers to support effective and ongoing implementation.

Why is Cognitive Strategies Lesson Plan Feedback valuable?

The most important factor in student learning is the teacher in front of the classroom.
Research has shown that no matter how well intentioned, effective staff development requires extensive monitoring, feedback, and coaching to facilitate effective implementation amongst all teachers. Students don t benefit from staff development that is not implemented.
Cognitive Strategies Lesson Feedback provides this valuable support and increases successful implementation.

How does it work?

Typically, the school uses roving subs to periodically pull out groups of teachers. The teachers meet with a DataWORKS researcher to review the lessons they have written. Feedback is given on the lessons for use of cognitive strategies that help students and for use of effective lesson delivery components. Teachers are pulled out by grade level or content area to meet in a conference room provided by the school.
This process should be repeated until all teachers are effectively incorporating cognitive strategies (help students learn and remember) into their lessons plans.
