Optimizing Classroom Productivity for English Learners

This two-day symposium will be extremely interactive in which the consultants will use direct teaching, continuous Checking for Understanding, pair-share, modeling of the practices, and group practice. Videotapes and classroom examples will be used. Additional information and either on-line or mail-in registration information is available here.

California ASCD will present this symposium to highlight the tremendous achievement that can be attained by English Learners and other students, too - when Time on Task, Alignment to Standards, Breadth of the Standards, and Instructional Effectiveness are concurrently maximized.

This two-day session shows you how to:

  • pre-teach content standards to ELs to accelerate rather than remediate
  • make academic content more accessible to ELs
  • incorporate academic vocabulary development into every lesson
  • use daily lessons to improve reading fluency
  • provide point of reference coaching to make sure that teachers are continuously enhancing practices
  • measure Instructional Effectiveness using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)
  • develop formative assessments that are truly aligned to what is taught
  • create Professional Learning Communities to make sure that Time on Task, Alignment to Standards, Breadth of the Standards, and Instructional Effectiveness are monitored, measured, maximized and maintained
